Congestion persists at Mexico's Manzanillo port after strike

June 4, 2025

Two weeks after the strike at the Mexican port of Manzanillo ended in mid-May, congestion and logistics delays at the port have yet to ease. Frontline freight feedback and warnings from logistics giant DXN show that the port's operations are severely hampered by overloaded bookings, delays in customs clearance, blocked import and export lanes and capacity constraints. It takes 6-7 hours for trucks to leave the port and some of them take longer; road facility problems outside the port have led to over 12 hours of waiting time at the gates, and reservation adjustments have aggravated the confusion. Ferrovalle bonded service has been suspended, and DXN advises customers to hold off on arranging cargo and speed up customs clearance to avoid costs such as demurrage, and the time for export allocations has been extended to 48-72 hours.

Chinese logistics companies remind that Mexico City and the port have recently strengthened the whole chain of high-frequency inspection, and the strategic port of Lazaro may become the focus of the next round of consolidation, and enterprises need to deal with regulatory risks in advance. The current port chaos is difficult to change in the short term, cross-border logistics need to adjust the plan.
