Port workers on Canada's west coast went on strike on November 4, involving container terminals in Vancouver and Prince Rupert. The two sides disagreed on a new collective agreement. The union's response to the employer's "final offer" was to issue a 72-hour strike notice. Meanwhile, container ships arriving at Canada's west coast ports chose to wait out the strike rather than move to other ports. The number of ships outside Canadian ports increased from six before the strike to eight this morning. Shipping companies hope that federal government intervention will bring all parties back to the negotiating table.
