Strike in Belgium! Port congestion in Antwerp may worsen

June 16, 2025

According to foreign media reports, Belgian trade unions will launch a nationwide strike on June 25th. This strike is led by the Belgian Federation of Trade Unions (FGTB), CSC, and CGSLB, and is a continuation of the labor disputes that began in December 2024. The strike notice covers employees on duty on June 25th and the evening shift on June 26th, as well as those who end their shift on June 25th and 26th at night.

Currently, the supply chain at the Antwerp Port is already tight. Data from early June showed that its congestion situation exceeded that during the pandemic. Affected by multiple factors such as geopolitics, low water levels on the Rhine River, strikes, and labor shortages, the average waiting time for ships is approximately 1.44 days, truck operation periods are in high demand, and the container entry window has been shortened. Although the specific impact of this strike on port operations is not clear at present, given its scale, it is very likely to exacerbate the chaos and pose greater challenges to freight transportation and operational efficiency. Shippers and freight forwarders shipping goods from Belgium need to be vigilant and prepare in advance for potential logistics delays.
