The global container fleet has an idle rate of less than 1%, with only 58 vessels idle!

December 31, 2024

Container shipping performed strongly in 2024, and the global commercial idle container fleet is at a very low level. Currently, only 58 ships with a total capacity of 200,002TEU are in commercial idle state, accounting for 0.6% of the global fleet of 30 million TEU. The approaching Chinese New Year is expected to boost demand, while potential US import tariffs under the new Trump administration and upcoming dockworker strikes in the Gulf and East Coast of the United States may also drive demand. The upcoming restructuring of shipping alliances in February will have a short-term impact on capacity supply. The strong expansion of container trade demand on major routes has boosted the outlook for the container fleet, especially the two largest trade routes from Asia to North America and Europe.
