The United States will impose a 50% tariff on eight types of home appliances starting

June 30, 2025

According to the previous announcement of the U.S. Department of Commerce, starting from June 23, the United States will impose tariffs on a variety of steel home appliances, including "steel derivatives" such as dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators.

The notice issued by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce shows that this tariff adjustment will add eight categories of home appliances and related products as "steel derivatives", and a unified tax rate of 50% will be levied, and the tax amount will be calculated based on the value of the steel components contained in the products. These eight categories of products include combined refrigerators and freezers, large and small dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, horizontal and vertical freezers, cooking stoves and stove ovens, food waste processors, welded metal racks, etc. The new regulations will apply to goods entering or extracted from warehouses from 00:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 23, 2025. However, if the product uses steel raw materials smelted in the United States, it can be tax-free even if it is processed overseas.

This is the second time that the Trump administration has expanded the scope of tariff products since it raised tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in March. Previously, on February 10, Trump announced that the tariff on steel and aluminum would be set at 25% starting March 12. Before the tariffs came into effect, the Ministry of Commerce included about 300 steel-related products in the tax list. On June 3, Trump raised the steel and aluminum tariff rate to 50% and authorized the Ministry of Commerce to include more steel-containing products in the tax scope. However, the tariff negotiations between the United States and the European Union are still uncertain and there are large differences, so the prospects are not optimistic.
