Truck drivers strike nationwide, port logistics pressure is high

May 28, 2025

Peru's logistics system is facing severe tests. Affected by factors such as port operation efficiency and poor road transportation network, the pressure of logistics operation has continued to rise recently. As the national truck driver strike day on May 27 approaches, the problem of transportation delays has further magnified, bringing higher risks to freight business and ship schedule arrangements.

As an important hub, the port of Callao has seen a significant increase in congestion in its core operating areas (including APM and DPW terminals) recently. The traffic efficiency of roads around the terminal has dropped significantly, resulting in serious delays in cargo loading and unloading operations. The sudden failure of the port's reservation and scheduling system has made the situation even worse, and the efficiency of cargo entry and exit has been directly impacted.

In recent days, the traffic volume on roads around the port has increased dramatically, and the waiting time for vehicles has been doubled. This makes it difficult for a large number of containers to be picked up within the free storage period stipulated by the port, and the shippers face additional storage cost pressure. In terms of export goods, due to frequent adjustments to the ship schedule, many booked goods face the risk of delayed shipment, and the stability of the supply chain of foreign trade companies has been impacted.

Industry insiders pointed out that the upcoming truck driver strike is expected to have a direct impact on the road logistics network. Once the strike occurs, the cargo transfer chain between the port and the inland may be temporarily broken, resulting in a further extension of the overall logistics delay cycle, and the transportation and time costs of related companies may increase significantly. At present, the Peruvian logistics industry is closely following the development of the situation and calling on all parties to resolve conflicts through consultation to avoid escalation of the supply chain crisis.
